The scene in which John reads Romeo and Juliet demonstrates the power of conditioning. Even though Helmholtz is fairly unorthodox,
I would say this would be verbal irony because he saying something but trying to describe it in different kind of way.
He’s trying to say that he sort of thinks he’s in love, even if he doesn’t really know the meaning of love he thinks he falling for her because while she’s passed out not doing anything he keeps on admiring her telling her how beautiful she is without even wanting to touch her. I think John likes her but he doesn’t know it yet.
